Background
Bosnia-Herzegovina is a country located in southeastern Europe on the Balkan peninsula. This country is slightly smaller than the state of West Virginia (62,775 sq km/24,230 sq mi) with a total land area of 51,129 sq km (19,772 sq mi). Its land contains mostly mountains and valleys. Bosnia's climate has hot summers and cold winters, and the length of the season depends on where you live (Ex: areas with higher elevations have short, cool summers and long, severe winters). It may not appear to be so, but Bosnia-Herzegovina actually has 20 km (12.4 mi) of coastline.
Overview
In 1991, the provinces of Yugoslavia wanted to secede. After Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia, many of the other provinces attempted to do the same; but the Serbs would not allow this to happen, so Serbia and these provinces went to war. Serbia and Bosnian Serbs, along with the Yugoslavian military (made mostly of Serbs), killed both Bosnian (Muslims) and Croatian civilians. This resulted in the death of over 100,000 men (80% Bosnian) by 1995. Men of the fighting age were killed, and women, children, and other men were tortured, sent to concentration camps and/or raped to be "ethnically cleansed".
Summary of News Video: Chief of Staff of the Bosnian Serb Army, Ratko Mladic led a
resistance force to stop a supposed attack on Srebrenica. Once they arrived in
the town, women and children were bused to safe territory where they would not
be harmed. All the men that were of fighting age were taken to neighboring
Serb villages where they were all shot and killed at mass murder sites.
